Much More about Brooke

Hi everyone! My name is Brooke, and I will be blogging on Beakerpedia for this semester.

 I am currently a senior from the Dayton, Ohio area. When I came on campus my senior year of high school I fell in love with the campus and how beautiful the campus was, the trees were different shades of orange and red. When I went on my campus tour I could not believe how friendly everyone was. Everyone was happy to see us, to tell us all about the campus, and more than happy to help us with whatever we needed. I felt before I had decided to attend here, they had already welcomed me into the Eagle family.

I knew from the beginning of my college career, that I wanted to be involved with campus life as much as possible. I am involved in many things on campus, I joined a sorority my freshman year, and throughout that time, I learned how to be a leader by being on many committees and holding an executive council position within the chapter. For the past 3 years I spend my afternoons at the University Farm, where I am a proud member of the Equestrian Team and also the president. For the past 2 years, I have had the opportunity to help incoming freshman with being a SOAR leader. As a college student, I know funds can be tight, so I also work on campus in the Office of Communications and Marketing as a student employee.

I am blogging to help you with the transition to college. Some of the topics I will be covering  will be about food and dining services, housing on campus, getting involved at MSU, how to get a work study,  financial aid,  paying your bill, and how to understand your class schedule. Final Exams & Extended Library Hours

Finals...the last thing to stand between you and winter break or even graduation. With finals week right around the corner, most of you are in constant study mode as you begin to prepare for your final exams. To make the most of your valuable time during these last few weeks, it helps to plan ahead and stay organized. If you plan on taking advantage of Camden-Carroll Library as a quiet study spot, you should note that they will have extended hours starting on Sunday, November 30- Thursday, December 4 where they will stay open until 2 a.m. with the exception being that Friday and Saturday when they will only be open until 11 p.m. During finals week, the library will be open 24 hours a day starting on Sunday, December 7 and will close at 4:30 p.m. that Friday. Much More Prepared

It's that time of year again! As the end of the fall semester quickly approaches you should already be thinking about what classes you are wanting to take in the spring. But before you make your class selections, be sure to check out these helpful hints for advanced registration.

• Contact your academic advisor soon to schedule an appointment to discuss how your semester is going and to make your course selections for spring. Also, talk with your advisor about course options beyond next semester along with other important information about your major.
• Be prepared for your advising session. Go to the appointment with a list of questions you need answered.
• Don't be afraid to "pick" your academic advisor's brain. Use him/her for the excellent resource they are- this person is an expert and is here to help guide you along your way toward degree completion. 
• Ask your academic advisor for more information on internships, study abroad, and other opportunities that will enrich your educational experience.

Advanced registration for the spring semester will be held November 5-18 and is determined by the number of credit hours that you have completed at the time of registration, which does not include classes you are currently taking. To see a full schedule of advanced registration or for more info, please visit the Office of the Registrar . Don't forget to check your student account for any academic or financial holds (THIS INCLUDES PARKING TICKETS) before attempting to register for classes. And be sure to schedule an appointment with your advisor today!

Freshmen with 0 Credit Hours Earned whose last name begins with the letters: B, Y, U, C, V, E, H, A, Q will have advanced registration open on Friday, November 14 from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. with a make-up time of 2 p.m. to 6 a.m. on November 17 for those who miss their designated time.

It's time to start getting your BLUE and GOLD ready, because Homecoming 2014 is just around the corner. Homecoming festivities will be held during the first week in October this year with plenty of events for both current students and alumni.

Some of the featured events for the weekend are the: 

• MSU Homecoming Parade on Main Street (Thursday, Oct. 2 at 6 p.m.) Take part in a long standing Homecoming tradition! Bring the entire family and find a spot along Main Street.  Parade attendees will enjoy floats, balloons and the marching band, as well as a variety of exciting special entries.  Campus and community groups interested in parade entry should call 606-783-2863 or email cngilliam@moreheadstate.edu. Prizes for the best campus and community entries will be awarded! 

• Nearly Naked Mile at ADUC (Thursday, Oct. 2 at 8:30 p.m.) Donate a coat and "run in your skivvies"!  The “Nearly Naked Mile”, presented by the Student Alumni Ambassadors, is a coat drive for families in the Morehead community. Faculty, staff, students and community members are encouraged to participate donate new or unwanted coats, which will be given to Rowan County Family Resource Center for distribution.  Clothing is required to participate. Participants can come dressed in costume or comfortable running clothes. Popcorn and plenty of water will be provided. 

• Homecoming Cookout in Eagle Rally Zone (Saturday, Oct. 4 at 11 a.m.) FREE FOOD!  Look for the Big Tent! Stop by to meet and mingle with other alumni, check and/or update your alumni information, register for a door prize and pick up the latest alumni gifts. Register online here. Interested in reserving your own tailgate spot? • Homecoming Football Game at Jayne Stadium (Saturday, Oct. 4 at 1 p.m.) Fill the stands at Jayne Stadium and cheer on the Football Eagles as they take on Campbell.  As traditions stand, the presentation of the 2014 Homecoming Court will be announced and the Homecoming King and Queen will be crowned at Halftime.  Tickets to the football game can be at the ticket window at Jayne Stadium on game day.  Advance ticket purchases can be made by calling 877-690-4483 or emailing events@moreheadstate.edu or by visiting MSU Athletics.

Whether you come to Homecoming for the fun-filled atmosphere or to catch up with new and old friends alike, it is definitely something you don't want to miss!

Welcome Back!

Whether you are beginning the fall semester at MSU as a returning student or freshman, there are a few things you should know to help make the most out of this semester.

1. Utilize Your Resources
The faculty and staff are here because they want to see you succeed! Take advantage of the time you have with your professors in and out of class to ask questions and get involved with the discussion. Most professors are more than willing to meet with students during their office hours or by appointment if they need additional help outside of class. If you think that you would benefit from having a tutor, look no further than the Tutoring & Learning Center located in Camden Carroll Library. Just don't be afraid to ask for help!

2. Stay Connected
Stay up-to-date with what is happening in your classes and on campus by signing up for Eagle Alerts and checking Blackboard daily. Eagle Alerts can be set up to notify you by cell phone/email of any campus or local emergencies, class cancellations, or delays and by checking your Blackboard you will be able to keep up with class assignments, discussions, and grades.

3. Get Involved
The best way for you to meet new friends and discover campus is to get out and get involved. Whether it is attending a free athletic event or joining a class at the Recreation & Wellness Center there is always something going on for students to do. If you are looking for something that requires a little more involvement, look no further than the many student organizations that are active on campus or any of the free student events planned through the Office of Student Activities, Inclusion, & Leadership (SAIL).

And now you know the 3 simple ways to get much more out of this semester.

Transfer Tuesday

Have you earned your associate's degree and want to complete your bachelor's? Are you thinking of transferring to Morehead State University? Then come join us on May 6 for Transfer Tuesday, a special event for students considering transferring from the Kentucky Community and Technical College System or another college or university, to see how much more we have to offer.

To help make the transfer process easier on you the Office of Enrollment Services will be hosting a free application day for all transfer students. On May 6 you will be able to apply online for free using the promo code "TransferTuesday" or at any campus location.

MSU offers courses at its four regional campuses in Ashland, Mt. Sterling, Prestonsburg and West Liberty, as well as online, to provide busy students like you with the opportunity to complete your work at a time and place that is convenient.

MSU also offers online bachelor's degree "completer" programs designed primarily for graduates of KCTCS. These programs allow KCTCS graduates to earn their bachelor's degree while continuing to meet their work and family obligations without traveling long distances.

Spring Graduation

Congratulations Class of 2014 your long awaited graduation is just around the corner, but before you "check-out" there are a few things you need to know. This spring's Commencement ceremonies will held in the Academic Athletic Center (AAC) on Saturday, May 10. There will be two ceremonies on this day separated by the college of academic program.

The Commencement ceremony for the Caudill College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences & the College of Education will begin at 10 a.m., please note that all students participating in this Commencement ceremony will need to be at the AAC by 9 a.m for the formation of the academic procession. 

The Commencement ceremony for the College of Science and Technology & the College of Business and Public Affairs will begin at 2 p.m., please note that all students participating in this Commencement ceremony will need to be at the AAC by 1 p.m. for the formation of the academic procession. 

All students participating in spring Commencement ceremonies are required to attend Commencement rehearsal at the AAC on Friday, May 9 at 5 p.m.

After diplomas have been printed and arrive in the Registrar's Office, they will be available for pick up for two weeks. Students may pick up their own diploma with a valid photo I.D. All unclaimed diplomas after that time will be mailed to the address provided on the degree application. They expect to have diplomas available within four weeks after Commencement.

If you still need to purchase your cap, gown, tassel, or hood those may be purchased at the University Bookstore any time before the day of Commencement. Cap, gown and tassel sets are $30 and are not returnable. The Master and Specialist degree hoods are $25 and are not returnable.
